Education has always played an important role in my life. Whether it is striving to understand how people learn or what motivates them, it takes drilling down with questions to get to the very essence of one’s thoughts and values. That approach has been vital to helping clients dream and discover that the "joy of wealth" has little to do with money.
My career began as a professor at Virginia Tech where I taught economics and consulted with agribusiness firms on financial management. I conducted research on market pricing strategies for Virginia dairy farmers and taught the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ course at Virginia Tech.
I started in the financial services industry almost four decades ago, and in 1997 I founded the wealth management firm, Joel S. Williams & Associates, later called JSW Financial. I have been honored over the years to share my knowledge and help families and individuals find joy in their money. Now as a member of the OLIO Financial Planning team, I continue to use my experience and perspective to help guide a younger generation of financial planners.
My leisure time is consumed with either music or the outdoors. Like many boys and girls, my interest in music began in the fifth grade when I started playing the alto saxophone. In 1987, a community band in Blacksburg was formed and I decided to join the fun. I switched to the tenor saxophone and have been playing ever since. While I perform with several groups, I especially enjoy playing “big band” music with “The Old Pros.”
My outdoor activities are centered around archery and reflecting on the wonder of God's creation. I am an avid bow hunter and I participate regularly in archery competitions. It’s a great feeling when the arrow lands dead center on the bullseye. It's called a "pinwheel".
